Seeds & Seed Blends

The freshest, cleanest bird food on the market.

No-Mess Blend

Our best-selling blend is designed to feed birds at the feeder and on the ground. "No Mess" means no shells, minimal cleanup and more food for the birds. Hulled sunflower pieces and chopped peanuts feed birds at the feeder while the millet gets kicked to the ground for ground-feeding birds. This blend was designed by Owner Bob Shanman for birds in the South Bay and is now used in our stores nationwide. Pound for pound, our No-Mess Blend bird seed offers the best value because you do not pay for uneaten seed waste (shells). The birds eat everything. Try offering No-Mess Blend bird seed in your tube or hopper feeders as a tidy feeding solution.

Deluxe Blend

Our Deluxe Blend is a traditional seed blend with only seeds the birds eat. It has black oil sunflower, white proso millet, safflower and some striped sunflower. Black oil sunflower is the best seed calorie/ounce for the birds and is the favorite food of most seed-eating birds. This blend has the same feeding strategy as our No-Mess blend, feed at the feeder and on the ground, but the seeds are not shelled. No grain fillers are used in this blend.

Nyjer® (thistle) is used primarily to attract American and Lesser Goldfinches. Its high oil content is an excellent energy source for active birds and is best used in our specially designed finch feeders. Our Nyjer® is always fresh because goldfinches are picky little eaters. Once seed starts to dry out and become stale, finches will turn up their beak for fresher forage. To be fed in a mesh finch feeder, finch feeder or a Nyjer® sock.

Premium Oil Sunflower

A favorite of almost all seed-eating birds, your feathered friends will happily fill up on our Premium Oil Sunflower bird seed. It's a great source of energy for the birds and 99% free of sticks, stems or other foreign matter so your feeders won't clog with debris. Oil sunflower has a high calorie/ounce ratio due to its high fat and protein content and its relatively thin shell. Among seed ingredients, oil sunflower attracts the greatest variety of small and large seed-eating birds. Studies by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology have shown that most birds prefer oil sunflower seeds to both striped sunflower and white proso millet. Fill your feeders with this top-grade fuel and watch the birds flock.

Black Oil Sunflower

Striped Sunflower

A favorite seed of large-billed seedeaters, Striped Sunflower helps to attract Black-headed Grosbeaks to your yard during spring and fall migrations. Striped Sunflowers are rich in oils and fats these birds need for their long journey to the tropics. Offer this seed in open tray feeders; these large birds prefer these over tube feeders. Be prepared for others to visit this big seed, such as Western Scrub-jays, House Finches, and the odd woodpecker in the South Bay. Also a favorite of squirrels.

If you are having squirrel and other pest problems, Safflower may be the solution for you. Many of your favorite birds will enjoy safflower, yet most squirrels typically don't. Safflower can be offered in hopper, platform or tube bird feeders and is especially appropriate for window or deck feeders where blackbirds or squirrels may be a problem. Offer safflower gradually, mixing it with the seed blends you currently provide and over time, you'll end up with a dining spot for all kinds of birds.

Peanuts are a great addition to the choices you offer your backyard birds. They come shelled or unshelled, and always roasted. Peanuts are a high-energy food that attract birds such as woodpeckers, flickers (winter), nuthatches and jays. Many of their visits will be to carry peanuts off and cache them for a later meal. Peanuts in the shell are typically used for feeding larger-billed birds such as jays. You can also offer peanuts in the shell to your squirrels.
